Until the Third Dynasty, most structures were built using mud brick - readily available and easy to use. Construction of the step pyramid represented a dramatic change in building methods and the technical skills they required. To successfully build large stone structures, great engineering problems needed to be solved and the properties of different materials, such as limestone and granite, had to be discovered. Success was only achieved in the Fourth Dynasty after much experimentation.
